Getting ready for paint.

The new Marvin windows (34 in all!) are in with the exception of 6. Finally getting ready to get the exterior painted. Looking to use Valspar color: 'New England Yellow' at the top half and 'Butter' on the lower half which are two light buttery yellows. These should go well with the dark gray roof and dark bronze windows. I plan to use a white of some sort on all trim. Still trying to figure out porch floor and ceiling colors. One (probably the floor) should match the window color...Any ideas? Maybe a light blue or gray?

Bushes Gone

Finally removed the overgrown bushes in front of the house. The work on the porch foundation has begun. We can now see the porch! Next step: Remove those impossible-to-remove yucca plants.

Old House Photo Found

After extensively searching for an old photo of the house, I just found a recent blog post from a former owner's (original I believe) family memeber (what are the odds?) and saw this photograph. Needless to say I was very excited. This photo probably dates from around 1915. Anyone have an idea as to the year/make of the car in the driveway? I think it may be a Baker Electric. In any case, this photo pretty much confirms my thought that the exterior was originally stained dark-brown.

Copper Pipes Removed and Scrapped

I took all the copper pipes from the house (they didn't look anything like this picture) to the local scrap yard in fear of a thief getting to them first. I managed to have over 400 pounds of copper and received over $1000 in cash! Well at least that covers the cost a few of the dumpsters. I can't imagine what all new copper would cost now, but I am definitely using PVC for drains and leaning towards using PEX (cross-linked polyethylene) for the water lines. Any thoughts regarding PEX?

First Day

Welcome to our new project. I will be doing my best to document the extensive renovation of this house. This Colonial was built in 1905 (according to county records) and has a great wrap around porch. Let us know what you think!
